United Nations

Do you remember United Nations?

The worldwide organisation created just after the sunset of World War Two with mainly one goal - to prevent global warfare in the future and to deal with our planet outside the boundaries of it's members?

United Nations Security Council*

Yes, it still exists, somewhere on the island of Manhattan, with its powerless debates and Security Council decisions without much responsibilities for those who signed them as well as for those affected in any way. Sadly, the power of global government never actually made to UN, despite all the good efforts throughout the years and it always staid with those in individual countries, or groups of them, either politically or geographically or ideologically divided. The truth is that there was no big decision in the history of the mankind, either good or bad, that is made by some mutual organisation of any kind. Those are all made by either one man alone in some sort of dictatorship, or by a small group of like-minded people hidden behind governmental politics. Yes, there was no big violent conflict almost 70 years since the UN founded back in 1945, but I have the feeling that the biggest credit for that goes to the "Manhattan Project" instead, whose result is actively holding worldwide leaders (and lunatics) from pressing the red button.

Well, while nuclear weapons are successfully postponing the global nuclear winter, it seems that the same metaphor is not true for global pollution and all biodiversity hazards surrounding the humanity on daily basis. The Earth is getting polluted every year and all the big players are still debating is it too early to react. At this point of time, it seems that there is virtually nothing powerful enough to prevent the imminent collapse of the world where our children is going to live. UN included.

United Nations Blue Helmets***

At least on this very day, April 22nd, also known as "The Earth Day" many of us are thinking differently. As well as about month ago during "The Earth Hour" when we are remembering all the bad things we did to our planet in the past and how to fix it in the future.

But, do all the celebrations and efforts happening once or twice a year make the difference? Let's hope they do. The Earth Day 2014 focuses on green cities project and this is the motto from the official page: "Today, more than half of the world’s population lives in cities. As the urban population grows and the effects of climate change worsen, our cities have to evolve. It’s time for us to invest in efficiency and renewable energy, rebuild our cities and towns, and begin to solve the climate crisis. Over the next two years, with a focus on Earth Day 2014, the Green Cities campaign will mobilize a global movement to accelerate this transition. Join us in calling for a new era of green cities."

In hope that future will bring something dramatically different and promising, and in a hope that today's effort will not be forgotten tomorrow morning, I will just quote the chairman of UN: "I appeal to all people everywhere to raise their voices. Speak out on behalf of this planet, our only home. Let us care for Mother Earth so she can continue to care for us as she has done for millennia." - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

At the very end, today is also Viktor's 7th birthday. Big round number. Happy birthday and Earth Day my son. Live long and prosper. No matter how non-Earthly that sounds.
